WRESTLING COACH

CHRIS CHIONUMA

Chris Chionuma has been wrestling for 12 years. He is a NAIA National Champion at Lindenwood and Big XII Champion at Oklahoma State University. He now is the head coach for the OBU Wrestling team.

“I love the individuality that wrestling supports. Everyone has their own style that works for them compared to others. The sport teaches a lot about life and how to deal with adversity.”

Living healthy is very important to Coach Chionuma.

“It is crucial to understand your body and listen to what it is telling you. From motor skills to your immune system, your body is constantly giving you feedback on what you are doing and reacting based on intake and output.”

He goes on to explain the balance between intake and output for a wrestler.

“Each wrestler has their own diet. Food intake is important so we are always eating food to fuel our bodies. Those who are cutting weight will work out more often than those who are bulking up. This is called increasing output. Those who are bulking up will need to increase input to sustain and increase their weight. Drinking water, eating protein and keeping sodium levels regular are important here.”

Coach Chris thinks people should give wrestling a try because it is a character sport. He says those who work hard and put in the hours will succeed. Talent isn't always successful in the wrestling world. He says wrestling in an individual effort to contribute to the team; it is magnified when you are on the mat competing for your team.

Chris Chinouma encourages students to come watch the wrestling events! December 2nd Vs University of central Oklahoma is one of their biggest home duals!

The Wrestling team provides a youth program that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays as 6pm in the Hatcher complex. That program and other summer wrestling camps they host get the community involved and get the community healthy.
